SCI-Arc Vertical Studio 2006

“Growing Structures”

Diverse aspects of biological system are applied in modern science. The link between mathematical and biological processes was formulated for the first time by D’Arcy Thompson in his work “On Growth and Form” in 1917.

What are potential aspects of biological systems that enable architectural qualities, and how can we develop their potentials?

Each student was asked to choose and investigate a specific aspect of a biological reference, using 2D and 3D analyzing techniques. The goal of the studio project was the sharpening of analysis tools and the development of digital design strategies. Digital 3D workflow enabled a direct connection with Rapid Prototyping technologies.
