Memorial Coliseum

The Memorial Coliseum, an early 60s International Modernist Era project, showcases in dramatic scale many of the architectural characteristics indicative of Modernist design.

The interior sculptural seating bowl serves as a counterpoint to the rectangular shell creating both a focus (centered on the event) and ambiguous corner volumes where the elliptical bowl pulls away from the edges of the box.

Our proposal retains the entirety of the exterior shell of the building. The new floors will be amorphously shaped, curved and sculpted to evoke the spirit of the original seating bowl while providing dynamic floor space to house multiple uses.
